I have read numerous books on optimisation and this one is ok. It has some useful visual aids to help understanding. However it fails in the same way that every other book in the market in that it does not give enough detail or information for you to properly carry out the things that they recommend. I am constantly asking myself "exactly what should I be doing" because it lacks specific instruction or tips to enable you to do the job properly. I therefore start to question whether they know themselves. I bought this book because it appeared to have a lot of detail on each subject, but sadly like all others, spends too much time on the obvious points then stops short of the specifics of how to go about doing it in the real world. There are many times when the content seems so vague and that they have not thought it through properly with explanations that would otherwise make it useful.

Another observation is that the content becomes a bit of a parody in that many of the things referred to seem only to apply to big corporate companies, hardly the sort of customer to read this book. However as a small business, doing seo ourselves (and this is surely the target market to read such a book) I find myself thinking that certain recommendations will be useless for the typical small business, something that is not addressed or acknowledged in this book. What annoys me slightly is that the reviews provided on the inside page are way different from mine and seem to totally over promise on the delivery in reality.

I want to keep this short and sweet as copywriting is not my strong point. If you are looking for a book that spells out the key issues on SEO in an order that actually makes logical sense - then this is the book for you. Rather than a book full of information (although it is very informative) - its best used a step-by-step tool to any SEO project. I can understand why one of the reviewers read it twice.

I had purchased SEO for Dummies but that was really a 'bits n pieces' kind of book and left me unguided. This book follows a chronological path and makes you stick to it.

I shall be using it on every SEO project from now on.

The information in this very specific book can help you increase the effectiveness of your Web efforts and gain better visibility among the Web search results on Google and other search engines. David Viney shares his expertise in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in helpful detail. Have you wondered if you need professional input in this area? Read here to find out how expert guidance, copywriting, site design and Web master services can supplement your efforts, and boost your visibility and sales. Viney explains how to assess your current results. He tells you how to make sure your Web page appears among search results in productive positions, but he doesn't overpromise about what you can accomplish. Much of his information is quite detailed and technical, but relatively accessible and applicable. However, it is somewhat vulnerable to becoming outdated, in places, if Google alters its current parameters. getAbstract expects future editions to handle that little problem quite nicely.

I've been in the internet industry for a long time and have worked for eBay, Yahoo, and of course the wonderful Amazon, so I've done my time with agencies and employed various SEO people myself, but I wish I'd read this book earlier.

'Get to the top of Google' provides an exceptionally comprehensive review of all of the basics, plus a load of stuff I'd never even thought about and in a no nonsense way that makes it easy for the non-technically minded to follow.

Like a number of the reviewers here, I've also been through quite a few of the books out there and without a doubt this one is the winner. Save your money on the others for your SEO costs (paid and natural).

Even if you are a coder, the suggestions here are very good reminders of what you should think about every day. I'm constantly surprised at the number of projects I've had returned that functionally do what I've specified, but simply havent been optimized!!! I can only presume that ignorance is the reason, in which case this book is the answer.

As I embark on a business of my own, I've laid out my design principles in line with the '7 step process'. I'll consider it part of the day to day operations and have already set up diary dates to review the results.

After reading the reviews I excitedly brought this book and joined the forum (thank god it was free or I would have been very upset). As a previous reviewer said, the links don't work or are very very out of date. If anyone is intersted in keyword research this book will adequately explain it, but that's about it.

The 5 star reviews like the links in this book are terribly out of date. Save your money as some of the terms in this book you can easily found if you look them up on the internet yourself with more relevent and up to date information (as SEO is very fast moving). In my experience the forum was deserted and after a few weeks I was very very disappointed and cancelled my free supbscription.

I wish I could say something positive about this book but, here's hoping the next edition is more up to date than this edition.

To make sense of the book you really have to practically follow the steps outlined but when the suggested links in chapter one don't work that isn't a good sign. Using the tools found at those links is a key part of the process the book outlines. This led to me using google to see if I could find other tools that did the same type of thing, which led to me questioning whether his method was best, and using google to find out more, which I was doing before I bought the book...

One of the main reasons I bought this book was because it gives free access to a forum where you can see a continually updated list of tools and the raise issues for the author to look at. I presume the links in the book did work once but the forum has not got updates for those links. I also discovered on the forum that a number of other readers had similar concerns.

Maybe I've just been unlucky but one of the reasons I bought this book was on the basis of postive reviews and I have to say my experience has not been positive.

Review by Dr. Stephen J. Having read this, my impression is that it's a book for those who are fairly new to the social media scene, and not aimed at the IT web-savvy professional. I fall somewhere in-between so found some of it useful, some of it timely reminders and some of it was stuff I was already well aware of.

However, it's a well-written, fairly casual yet highly informative text on how to make the most of social media in a business context, addressing some important issues beyond one-way 'what we're doing' messaging to using it as a deliberate and managed touch-point for the current generation of IT literate consumers. There are some great examples of businesses of various sizes using social media to create advocates out of complainers, generate customer groups and fans, make offers and even create new products.

The style is, though, not one for the 'follow this sequence of steps and it'll all work', i.e. those looking for an IT recipe to follow. It's much more strategic and thought-provoking than that, even asking you to ponder whether social media is actually relevant at all to your target customers.

Overall it's a good read that I know I'll be dipping back into but like all IT guides it's at the mercy of the pace of internet progress.

I'm not a business person, but I am professionally interested in social media, and I was very happy to see that this book isn't one of the endlessly breathless, overly ethusiastic documents on the theme of 'the internet will make you rich'. It contains sober advice, well written and well presented, and importantly also tells you when you *shouldn't* be wasting your time on social media.

It is alas not especially in depth - the topic could have been explored in greater depth than it was, but as a low level introduction to what you should be doing with social media, you can't go wrong.

Review by Ms. Rl Heptonstall for This is Social Media: Tweet, Blog, Link and Post Your Way to Business Success

I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'This is social media' by Guy clapperton. It's easy to get into, digest and apply, which means that you can start tinkering about with social media as soon as you start using the book - I say 'using' because it really should be read near a PC. It also acts as a sort of directory, so you can look up the bits you want to return to as and when they become applicable.

Guy takes quite a back to basics approach, carefully explaining the background behind social media and then gradually introducing each area. If you're a social media whizz then this book probably isn't for you, but if you're either completely alien to, or still to use the full social media mix, then it could definitely offer value for your business.

One aspect that really impressed me is that Guy doesn't try to convince his readers that all types of social media are relevant to every business. On the contrary, he encourages you to think about your own aims and objectives before starting with any of them - so you're far less likely to waste your time. There's also a good understanding of the cost of social media to your business, in terms of time, which again makes the book extremely practical.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to start seeing some results soon!
